How Heat Pump Water Heaters Work

The core component of heat pump water heaters is an evaporator coil, usually located at the top of the machine. This coil contains refrigeration fluid, a material that at low temperatures has the unusual property of changing from a liquid to a gas.

These water heaters are particularly efficient in warmer regions as they operate by extracting oxygen from the surroundings. Nevertheless, even in colder places, air with slightly low temperatures can still be used. The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the entering air, causing the refrigerant to evaporate and become a low-pressure gas.

The compressor, an essential element located within the water heater, increases the pressure of the low-pressure gas by compressing it. This compression increases both the temperature and pressure of the gas, making it hotter than the air around it. The high-temperature and high-pressure gas then flows through a condenser coil, typically located at the bottom of the heat pump water heater. This coil enables the passage of heat from the gas to the water, causing the refrigerant to condense back into a liquid state by heating the water it connects with.

During this stage, when the refrigerant condenses and transfers its heat to the water, the temperature of the water increases. The resulting hot water is kept in a storage vessel for future use. Once the refrigerant has released its heat, it transforms back into a low-pressure liquid. It then passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature are decreased, getting it ready for the next cycle. The refrigerant, which has now reached a lower temperature, goes back to the evaporator coil, thus maintaining the ongoing cycle.
